[Unpad.ac.id, 31/05/2013] Unpad Faculty of Economics and Business in association with the School of Business and Economics, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organized “The 5th International Conference Of The Asian Academy Of Applied Business (AAAB) 2013” from May 30 until June 1, 2013 at Pusat Convention Centre, Hotel Harris, Bandung. This event was attended by economic lecturers and business practitioners from Bandung and by Malaysian AAAB’s representatives as well.
According to Prof. Dr. Syed Azizi Wafa, the president of AAAB, this conference covered some issues regarding the economic development in South-East Asia. The discussion is expected to produce alternative solutions to resolve the economic problems in the region. “This is the event that brings together economic experts and practitioners from various South-East Asia countries to collaboratively work toward solutions for improving our economy,” said Prof. Syed in between of the event. He further added that one of the issues discussed in the conference is the implication of the economic crisis in Europe on the economic development of ASEAN. Even though Europe is very distant from here and the crisis doesn’t directly impact us, still, Indonesia and Malaysia have to anticipate and prevent it from escalating.
Through the conference, Prof. Syed seeks to work out an effective solution to promote ASEAN economic development. “At least we can solve our problems without outside interference,” he stated.
The head of Unpad Graduate Accounting Program, Prof. Winwin Yadiati also showed her appreciation for the conference. In her opinion, this conference will produce a lot of positive outputs not only for Indonesian economic development, but also for ASEAN economy growth. In addition, it can also help foster research collaboration between ASEAN countries.
“The conference is important to improve the quality of our education,” she added.
The speakers in this year’s conference are Prof. Datuk Dr. Noor Azlan Ghazali from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, along with Prof. Ilya Avianti and Prof. Dr. Niki Lukviarman as keynote speakers.
One of the traditions in every AAAB conference is the nomination of Captain Industry, an award given to a competent and consistent business practitioner, which this year is given to Chairil Tanjung, the president of Trans Corp.
In accordance with Prof. Syed dan Prof. Winwin, the dean of UMS School of Economics and Business, Prof. Dr. HJH. Arsiah Hj. Bahron, said that the first AAAB initiated by UMS aims at gathering economists from various ASEAN regions. “Hopefully, this conference can be the place for the economic experts to collaborate to promote ASEAN economic development,” he added.
