Prof. Armida S. Alisjahbana Elected as UNESCAP Executive Secretary

[unpad.ac.id, 09/14/2018] Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business Unpad Prof. Dr. Armida Alisjahbana was appointed United Nations (UN) as the 11th Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

Quoted from the official website of the United Nations, Thursday (13/9), Prof. Armida also acts as the coordinator of five United States regional commissions.

The position of Deputy Secretary-General was obtained at the recommendation of the UN Secretary General for the United Nations General Assembly Antonio Guterres. The election of Prof. Armida replaces Shamshad Akhtar as the previous Executive Secretary.

The position is equivalent to cabinet ministers in member countries.

Prof. Armida was an important figure in the establishment of the SDGs Center Unpad, the first university study center that focused on strengthening SDGs. The center that was established in 2016 contributed to the preparation and evaluation of policies and programs to achieve SDGs so that inspired other universities in Indonesia to establish a similar center.

In the field of government, Prof. Armida served as Minister of National Planning and Development / Head of Bappenas in 2009 to 2014.

For the appointment, Prof. Arminda will continue the mission of achieving SDGs at the international level. Through UNESCAP, it will promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific. UNESCAP together with government organizations and other UN entities will also strengthen institutional capacity to serve the rights, address the aspirations and needs of the community.
