Universitas Padjadjaran Launched Batik Unpad at Its 59th Anniversary

[Unpad.ac.id, 3/09/2016] In commemoration of the 59th Anniversary and to preserve cultural heritage, Universitas Padjadjaran launched Batik Unpad motif that will be used by the Big Family Unpad and enrich the batik motifs in West Java. Unpad Batik was designed by a renowned designer who is also alumni of Unpad.

“It is a form of commitment to keep the Unpad cultural values that exist in West Java,” said Rector, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad during the launch of Batik at Graha Sanusi Hardjadinata Unpad, Jln. Dipati Ukur 35 Bandung, Saturday (3/09). The launch was held during West Java BatikFest series of activities organized by Unpad and West Java Batik Foundation (YBJB).

Also attending the event were Chairman of YBJB, Sendy Dede Yusuf, ST., Batik designer H. Komarudin Kudiya, S.Ip., M.Ds., Chairman of the Committee for the 59th Anniversary, Prof. Ramdan Panigoro, and a number of leaders of Unpad. West Java BatikFest would run until Sunday (4/09) featuring events, among others, batik fashion, batik workshop, exhibition and bazaar, the signing of the MoU between Unpad and YBJB, batik-themed talk shows from a variety of perspectives, as well as the Tribute to Hj. Utje CH Suganda (deceased), the former Regent of Kuningan.

Komarudin who is also an alumnus of FISIP Unpad explained that Batik Unpad was specially designed with the idea of the source of the elements forming the logo Unpad.

“Batik Unpad has not only exclusive and unique batik design but also is expected to be presented Unpad’s concern on cultural heritage of beautiful and enchanting West Java batik. Batik Unpad also represented one of the icons, images, bookmarks, identity, community of heritage that must be kept and preserved, “said Komar who is also the Chief Executive of YBJB.

While Sendy Dede Yusuf said that the presence of Batik Unpad style added variety to Jabar Batik and is expected to emphasize indigeneity. “Batik Unpad and West Java BatikFest activities are proof that Unpad has concern for the cultural heritage,” said Sendy.

Regarding the Tribute to Hj. Utje CH Suganda (deceased), Sendy explained that the deceased had a passion for presenting with Kuningan batik. On the idea Hj. Utje who was then Chairman of the National Crafts Council for Kuningan District, finally launched several Kuningan batik motifs in 2011.

“Since Hj. Utje became Regent of Kuningan in 2013, batik Kuningan has increased its popularity in the community, including the batik craftsmen. Hj. Utje died on 7 April 2016, and to commemorate her services we held a Tribute to Hj. Utje CH Suganda,” said Sendy. *
