[Unpad.ac.id, 16/08/2016] Universitas Padjadjaran in cooperation with California Polytechnics State University United States of America and Jatinangor subdistrict are developing DC (direct current) house technology prototype. This direct current technology is considered to effectively meet the demand for electricity in rural areas, and installed at the District Office Jatinangor.

The first DC house in Indonesia was unveiled by Regent Sumedang, H. Eka Setiawan, together with Rector, Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, through signing inscription in front of the District Office Jatinangor, Monday (15/08).

The inauguration was also attended by Head of Jatinangor subdistrict, M. Wasman, the initiator of DC house technology who is also a Professor in Calpoly State University, Prof. Dr. Taufik, Sumedang District Assembly Members, representative of leadership of Sumedang regency, as well as faculty and staff representative of Program Study Electrical Engineering Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran.

On the occasion, Prof. Taufik explained that the DC house technology is an efficient technology and environmentally friendly to produce an electric current independently without relying to AC power distribution. This technology is far more efficient and effective use when compared to the AC power distribution to rural areas.

“AC power distribution is much more costly,” said this scientist from Indonesia.

By using DC house technology, people in rural areas can generate electricity independently by starting from a small scale. This scale, said Prof. Taufik, can be increased in capacity as needed.

This technology is environmentally friendly because it uses the potential energy that exists in nature. At the district office Jatinangor this DC harness solar and wind energy. One module is installed in the house DC is capable of producing a maximum of 200 watts of electricity.

“This capacity can be expanded by adding one more module. It’s much cheaper,” explained Prof. Taufik.

This prototype is installed as an example application of DC House technology especially for rural areas. Currently, the technology is being registered to obtain patent rights, both in the United States and Indonesia.

Rector appreciated development in the District Jatinangor DC house. He stated that this technology is one way to directly fulfill Tridharma Universitas in society.

“This is one of our efforts to give effect to the community,” said Rector. *
