SEAMS School 2016 Coordinator, Prof. Dr. Budi Nurani Ruchjana, said that the event was attended by 28 participants from several countries, namely Indonesia, the Philippines and Pakistan. The entire accommodation of participants was funded by travel grant from the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA).

“The participants are from undergraduate and master students level,” said Prof. Budi when interviewed after the opening event, on Wednesday (10/08).

Furthermore, Prof. Budi, who is also the Head of Applied Mathematics Lab FMIPA Unpad explained that the implementation of SEAMS School at Unpad was an implementation of Grant Consortium of Scientific Modeling of Spatio Temporal, Data Mining and Optimization Modeling obtained by Department of Mathematics. With these grants, the activities were carried out with the involvement of stakeholders, i.e. ITS, University of Groningen, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Lapan Bandung.

The purpose of this activity is to exchange knowledge related to mathematics in several countries. For ten days, participants were given materials related to Spatio Temporal, Data Mining and Optimization Modeling by academics from various universities and stakeholder institutions. In addition, participants would be divided into eight working groups to work on a project with the approach applied mathematics problems.

This annual event is organized independently by universities in the ASEAN region. Although held in the ASEAN countries, participants of this activity are open to all countries in the world.

In addition to exchanging insights in mathematics learning, this activity is expected to build a culture of research cooperation to joint publications, so as to provide a positive impact for the development of Mathematics.

“It is expected that participants do not just stop here, but there must be collaboration in the future,” said Prof. Budi.
