Building A Turtle Conservation, Bangka Barat Regency Partnered with FPIK Unpad

[Unpad.ac.id, 12/04/2016] West Bangka Regency government established partnership with Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) Universitas Padjadjaran to prepare turtle conservation building in their region. The signing of Charter of Cooperation between FPIK Unpad and West Bangka regency was held at Executive Lounge Unpad, Jln. Dipati Ukur 35 Bandung, Tuesday (4/12).

The Charter was signed by Dean of FPIK Unpad, Dr. Ir. Iskandar, M.Sci, and the Head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) West Bangka Regency H. Aries Supriatna. According to Dr. Iskandar, there are several locations that became places for turtles to lay eggs therefore local government was requesting Unpad to determine exact location for the turtle breeding center to be built.

“This species of turtle is a protected animal therefore in the future there is hope for a conservation area linked with local tourism department,” said Dr. Iskandar when interviewed after the signing.

Of the five species of protected sea turtles, two of them are found in theWest Bangka area, the Green Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle.

“We are going to visit the regency for further research and at the same time offer a wide range of other scientific potential in Unpad that could be incorporated with people of West Bangka regency, “said Dr. Iskandar. *
