In AEC, Industry Must Be Increasingly Efficient To Have Competitive Ability

[Unpad.ac.id, 11/01/2016] Growth in industrial sector is key of Indonesia competitiveness against ASEAN countries in the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). In order to compete, Indonesia industry is required to improve its efficiency, increase productivity and competitiveness.

Efficiency is the source of advantage in competition to create better quality product,” says this Lecturer of Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Padjadjaran, Maman Setiawan, SE, MT, PhD, as the speaker in “Measuring the efficiency and productivity: Evidence from The Developed and Developing seminar at Grha Sanusi Hardjadinata Unpad Jln. Dipati Ukur 35 Bandung, Monday (11/01)

This seminar was held in collaboration of FEB Unpad and Wageningen University. Besides Maman, other speakers are Prof. Alfons Oude Lansink (Wageningen University) and Prof. Spiro Stefanou (University of Florida).

Based on data from World Economic Forum in 2015, Maman said that Indonesia is still ranked fifth among ASEAN countries in level of market efficiency quality. Meanwhile in the industry competitiveness rankings Indonesia also ranked fifth out of 10 countries in the ASEAN region.

Competition within MEA is playing an active role in improving efficiency of the company. Maman explained that competition can be one of market disciplines, aiming to improve efficiency of the company and ultimately improving quality of the products.

“MEA can be a motivation for increasing efficiency in Indonesia,” said Maman.

Meanwhile Prof. Alfons explained that it is important for a company to evaluate their performance in order to retain competitiveness in the market. This performance is measured by calculating level of efficiency using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This method is commonly used by corporate world to measure efficiency of the company based on the amount of output resulting from the use of certain inputs.

Also, Expert Staff of Industry Strengthening Structure from Ministry of Industry, Ngakan Timur Antara said that the Ministry is expecting academics efforts to conduct research in relation to improving efficiency of companies in Indonesia.

“We are waiting for academics to come forward with results of research as evaluation for Indonesian companies in order to increase their competitiveness,” said Ngakan. *
