The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine (KKP) Affairs Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN), Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), WWF, Coral Triangle Center (CTC) organizes “Youth Essay Writing Competition” bringing a theme “Blue Economy.” The event is a preparation for Indonesia which is to host the third Regional Business Forum in the world Coral Triangle Region that includes Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Solomon Islands (www.ctirbf2013.com).
Blue Economy was pioneered by Dr. Gunter Pauli from ZERI (Zero Emission Research Initiatives –http://www.theblueeconomy.org ) in 2004. The concept conveys new meaning on added value of natural resource management in a bigger scale. The aforementioned added value is resulted from all business activities that includes non-waste aspects, creativity, innovation, technology, and correct assessment on natural resource balance.
The idea was warmly welcomed by the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech “Leaders Valuing Nature”, delivered in Rio+20 in Brazil, June 2012. The president suggested that Blue Economy be made new guideline for development acceleration in Indonesia that puts emphasis on economic growth, people’s welfare, and environmental health.
Due to its relative newness, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Affairs invites all Indonesian students to contribute in implementing this new concept for the betterment of our nation.
